Lake William Hovell is approximately 25km from Whitfield at the southern end of the King Valley. It is a beautiful drive past wineries, and ex tobacco farms, passing directly under Powers Lookout.

At the lake, swimming, fishing and boating (with restricted speeds) are allowed. Picnic and toilet facilities are available but no camping. During spring, the King River immediately below the dam wall is used for white water rafting and kayaking.
At the southernmost section of Lake William Hovell is the entrance to the Alpine National Park. With many kilometers of four wheel drive tracks, it is the beginning of a myriad of tracks for four wheel driving, access to fishing spots, walking or mountain biking.
